INSIDE / OUT

We’ve all heard the saying: real change starts from within. Whether it’s in nature or in our own lives, the most meaningful transformations happen when they come from the inside. When external forces try to push us in one direction or another, it can feel overwhelming, even destructive. But when we choose to make changes ourselves? That’s where the magic happens. It’s a reminder that real growth stems from inner strength and determination, not external pressure.

Think of an egg for a moment. Fragile, yet strong enough to protect life. If we crack the egg from the outside, life ends. But when it hatches from within, it’s the beginning of something new—a chick, ready to take on the world. The difference? One is an outside force ending life, while the other is a natural push toward growth.

This metaphor applies to us, too. When we feel external pressure—whether it’s from people, society, or expectations—it can feel like we’re being cracked from the outside, forcing change. But when growth comes from within, it’s different. It feels empowering. It feels right. That’s the kind of change that leads to real transformation.

A Turning Point

I remember a time when I felt completely overwhelmed by daily responsibilities. An accident abruptly ended my career, followed by months of intense therapy, leaving me at home full-time. While I used to manage everything before—working, household chores, family needs—it now felt like I was barely keeping my head above water. With a brain injury added to the mix, every task seemed harder. It felt impossible to find time for myself or break free from the daily grind.

Then, something shifted inside me. I realized I wasn’t happy just going through the motions. I wasn’t caring for myself or enjoying life the way I wanted to. This realization didn’t come easily, but it was necessary. Instead of waiting for someone to come along and relieve me of my responsibilities, I decided to start making small changes. I carved out moments of self-care, asked for help when needed, and gradually shifted my focus to what I needed to feel balanced and fulfilled.

It wasn’t a dramatic transformation. But slowly, I started to feel a shift in my mindset. I began taking control of my time and energy, and it made all the difference.

External Pressures

Most of us have felt stuck at some point—whether it’s in a job, a relationship, or a life situation that just doesn’t feel right. Outside pressures—societal expectations, family responsibilities, or the fear of failure—can make it hard to break free. We feel overwhelmed, unsure how to make a change.

But when something shifts inside us—when we start focusing on what we truly want—we begin to move forward. We think less about external pressures and more about our own happiness and fulfillment. This internal shift is what allows us to make the changes that truly matter, whether it’s starting a new job, making a lifestyle change, or pursuing a passion we’ve put on the backburner.

A Canadian study found that 80% of people feel anxious about making big life changes. Whether it’s changing jobs, moving, or starting a new hobby, the fear of the unknown can be overwhelming. But here’s the good news: the same study found that 70% of those who made changes based on their own choices felt happier and more content with their decision in the long run. So, while change may be scary, when it comes from within, it can lead to greater satisfaction.

Self-Awareness

One of the most important parts of personal growth is self-awareness. It’s about understanding who we are, what we value, and what we want. Without it, it’s easy to get caught up in outside pressures and lose focus on what truly matters.

I once had a friend who was always chasing the next big thing—whether it was the latest trend, a new job, or a relationship. It seemed like she had everything figured out. But one day, she admitted that she felt lost. She realized she had been making decisions based on what others expected, rather than what she truly wanted.

This was her turning point. She slowed down, started listening to her inner voice, and focused on what made her happy—not what looked good to others. It wasn’t an easy process, but in the end, she found more fulfillment by letting go of external pressures.

Psychologists believe that lasting change happens when it comes from intrinsic motivation—the desire to do something because it’s personally rewarding. When we make changes for ourselves, we’re more likely to stick with them. For example, people who start a new exercise routine because they enjoy it are more likely to keep up with it than those who do it just to lose weight or impress others.

So, how do we grow from the inside out?

Here are a few tips:

  • Know your values: What matters most to you? Understanding your core values can guide your decisions and help you grow in ways that feel right.

  • Take small steps: Change doesn’t have to happen all at once. Small, manageable steps can lead to big transformations.

  • Ignore external pressures: It’s easy to get caught up in what others expect from us. Focus on what you want, not what others think you should do.

  • Be patient: Growth takes time. Give yourself the space to grow at your own pace.

When we make choices that align with our values and desires, we not only feel better—we create a ripple effect. Positive inner change often leads to better opportunities and relationships in the outside world. It’s like dropping a stone in water—the ripples spread out far beyond the point of impact.

In nature, when one tree in a forest grows stronger, it often helps the surrounding trees thrive, sharing resources through interconnected roots. Similarly, when we grow from within, we lift up those around us, too.

Great things always begin from the inside. Whether it’s personal growth, career changes, or finding happiness, the key is to start with what feels right for us—not what the world expects.

Just like the hatching egg, life’s most beautiful transformations happen when we push from the inside out.

GREAT things always start from the INSIDE.
